Devon Island (mp3) - written for the NASA/SETI Haughton Mars Project

Devon Island

At midnight under a rain-lashed sky
A modest crew set sail for the arctic passage
Chasing the ghost of a boyhood hero
60 years after that tragic voyage

All hands died on two glorious ships
They vanished in the arctic wilderness
They had brought with them their home environment
And they never knew what the arctic offered to them

CHORUS: Devon Island, I will live off your land
And you can show us how to conquer a new world
Devon Island, help us be all we can
Help us on to Mars

Amudsen learned to live off the land
He mimicked how the Eskimo lived
His small crew of six embraced the wilderness
And forced the Northwest Passage

Now we have an extraordinary chance
To show that we are future Martians
With a brave crew of six, we'll embrace the wilderness
Of the arctic Devon Island

CHORUS: Devon Island, I will live of your land
And you can show us how to conquer a new world
Devon Island, help us to understand
Help us on to Mars!
